There are many joys in life, a cool beer after a hard day, finding a tenner you didn’t know you had or getting an unexpected pay rise. However these are nothing compared to my absolute joy at the return of the football season.

Whilst I love cricket, golf and all the other sports that only work in summer, they just can’t fill the void left when the final whistle of the FA Cup final (or Champions League Final this year) goes. Everything that comes after is basically just waiting for the start of the next year.

What is there to do when there is no Soccer A.M., MOTD, 606 or Super Sunday. No-one goes to the pub with their mates to watch The Open, and no-one sits outside for two hours in an evening in the middle of January to catch the test match.

So the start of the new season is one of the things I most look forward to, even now weve dropped down to the Championship. There’s more games, less diving and fewer whinging managers in this league, and that can only be a good thing.

What is also good this year is the prospect of a competitive season for Blackpool after last year’s almost heroics. Some good wins and comebacks already with only four games done. Hopefully this season will be even better than last time!

Up the Pool!

In an age where most new music seems to be either a rip off of something that’s come before or generated by a computer, it’s awesome to see that one of my favourite artists, Frank Turner, finally seems to be getting the recognition that he deserves for producing quality, original material.

His latest album, “England Keep My Bones”, is definately one of his best and seems to be getting pludits from both critics and fans not just for the great songs but also for the quality of the lyrics. The seems to have been a bit of a lost art in recent years with classics such as:

“Barbra Streisand” – Barbra Streisand, Duck Sauce
“I got so many clothes I keeps em in ma aunts house” – Tinie Tempah Pass Ouas
and
“Tomorrow is Saturday, And Sunday comes afterwards, I don’t want this weekend to end” Rebecca Black – Friday

The opening song on Franks album, Eulogy, puts them to shame without even trying:

“I may not be the perfect kind of person,
I may not do what mum and dad dreamed,
but on the day I die, I’ll say at least I f**king tried.
That’s the only eulogy I need,
thats the only eulogy I need.”

You can even listen to the full album for nothing from his website:

It appears that the ability to listen to the album for free no longer exists

So my aims for this year were:

- Get a golf handicap
- Remember everyone’s birthday
- Go to the gym enough to justify the cost

At the moment I’m probably at about 0.8 out of three (I’ve remembered most peoples birthdays). Not a great success rate however I have now left the gym so I can replace this aim with cycling to work, which so far is going quite well. I’ve also almost applied for membership at Fairhaven Golf Club so I guess that’s the first step to getting a golf handicap.

Given my performance on my last few rounds of golf I don’t think I’ll be getting a particularly good handicap but that wasn’t part of the plan. Maybe next year my aim can be to knock a few shots off.

So for the rest of the year my aims will be:

- Get a golf handicap
- Remember everyone’s birthday
- Cycle to work enough times to make the purchase worthwhile
- FINISH THE FLIPPIN BATHROOM!!!

On the 5th May, voters in the UK will have the opportunity to change the way in which MPs are elected. The questions that is being asked, to which voters will be able to chose ‘yes’ or ‘no’, is: At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the [...]

I finally started the cycle to work plan last Friday. It seems to be taking about half an hour to cover the 8 miles and the same on they way home using an alternative route (to optimise the downhills). Only problem is the road surface in one section, about 3km long, is absolutely shocking!! I [...]

Time to be healthy

Recently some collegues and I started car sharing to work in an effort to save money on fuel and also because it’s good for the environment in general. The next step along this path is to abandon the car alltogether and start cycling to work which will in theory save more money, have little environmental [...]

I was thinking this morning about the real impact of rising fuel prices, the knock on effect seems to be that everything gets more expensive but in the long term is that really a bad thing? As manufacturing in the UK is all but dead, most of our goods are imported from elsewhere. With prices [...]

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12569011 Spotted this posted by a couple of people on Twitter and on Facebook. But it’s weird right? For babies, from their mother, I’m all for it. But adults, really? Also…..WHO IS PAYING £14 TO EAT THIS?!?!? FREAKS!!!

Following my recent post about rubbish TV, and a conversation I had with some mates in the pub, I’ve been considering who the best ever TV character is. I don’t think we came to a definitive answer and our thoughts were obviously swayed by some pretty dubious taste in viewing in some cases, however I [...]

I recently received a letter telling me that my driving license needed to be updated. I could either pay £5 for some new passport photos or save my hard earned cash, take my license into a Post Office and do it for nothing. There is only one Post Office in Preston where I can do [...]
